Your Brain Has a Fact-Checker, and Déjà Vu Is It Glitchinn

You walk into a room you've never been in before, and for one disorienting second, you know this exact moment. Not vaguely — specifically. You know what's about to be said, which way you're about to turn your head. Then it's gone. This video is about what's actually happening in your skull during that half-second, and why it has almost nothing to do with ghosts, past lives, or a glitch in reality. The term was coined in 1876 by philosopher Émile Boirac — déjà vu literally means "already seen." For over a century nobody had a real explanation. The first real clue came from hospital wards: in the late 1800s, British neurologist John Hughlings Jackson noticed patients with temporal-lobe epilepsy reporting an overwhelming false familiarity right before a seizure. That gave déjà vu an address in the brain for the first time. Decades later, neurologist Josef Spatt proposed why it feels so specific and so fleeting: familiarity and memory are two separate systems. The rhinal cortex handles a fast, general "I know this." The hippocampus handles the actual where-and-when. Normally they fire together. Spatt's theory: déjà vu happens when the familiarity system fires alone, with nothing from memory backing it up. That still didn't explain why the feeling gets caught and corrected almost instantly. Cognitive neuroscientist Akira O'Connor, at the University of St Andrews, triggered déjà vu-like sensations on command inside an MRI scanner — and found the spike wasn't in the memory regions. It was in the frontal lobes, the areas responsible for checking facts and resolving conflicting information. Psychologist Alan Brown, at Southern Methodist University, compiled decades of global research showing déjà vu peaks in your twenties and drops off sharply after forty — exactly the pattern you'd expect from an active fact-checking system, not a random glitch. And researcher Chris Moulin's work on déjà vécu, in patients with certain forms of dementia, shows what happens when that same alarm gets stuck permanently in the "on" position.
